Hong Kong, 1985. Five boys discover the wildlife markets of Shenzhen, divert birds of prey from the soup pot, and teach themselves falconry in the hills above the city. This memoir is the story of a colonial childhood, two cultures colliding, and the blurred line between rescuing wildlife and possessing it — what happens when a boy who cares deeply doesn't yet know enough to act on it.
